Deborah J. Hughes is the Executive Director of the Legal Assistance Center, a nonprofit legal self help center located in Grand Rapids, Michigan. The LAC is a community created, community supported legal self-help center. As Executive Director, Deborah is responsible for the legal, program, and business operations of the LAC. The LAC is committed assuring access to justice by helping people solve legal problems and use the courts on their own by providing legal information, forms, resources, guidance, and referrals.
Deborah has a BA from the University of Virginia and a JD from the University of Iowa College of Law. She began her legal career in private practice in Iowa and has taught at Grand Valley State University. She has been Executive Director of the Legal Assistance Center since 2012.
Deborah serves on the Michigan Justice for All Commission, co-chaired the JFA Self-Help Center Workgroup, serves on the Regulatory Reform Committee, and the Forms Committee. She also serves on the State Bar of Michigan Affordable Legal Services Committee, has previously served on the Solutions on Self-Help Task Force and contributed to the 21st Century Law Practice Task Force. She serves on the Legal Studies Advisory Boards for Grand Valley State University and Davenport University.
